For twenty years, brands fought to win a single thing: a position on the first page of Google. That fight had a name. SEO. Search Engine Optimization.

Then, sometime in the last two years, the floor moved. Buyers stopped opening Google for some kinds of questions and started asking ChatGPT or Perplexity instead. The answer came back in one tidy paragraph, with two or three brands mentioned by name and a few links at the bottom. No ten blue results to scroll. No need to click anywhere.

That change has a new name. GEO. Generative Engine Optimization.

So what is GEO, really?

GEO is the practice of making your brand visible inside answers from generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot.

You are not trying to rank. You are trying to be cited, mentioned, recommended, and quoted when AI gives someone an answer about your space.

Why GEO matters right now

Three things are happening at the same time, and together they explain why this is no longer optional.

  1. Buyers are using AI to make shortlists. They ask, “What are the top tools for X” and the AI hands them three names. If you are not one of those names, you do not exist for that buyer.
  2. AI answers reduce the need to click. When the answer is in the chat window, the user often does not visit any website. Your SEO ranking still matters but it is fishing in a smaller pond.
  3. The AI engines are different from search. Google ranks pages. AI engines synthesize answers from many sources. The signals that make you visible are different.

What GEO actually involves

There is no single trick. But the work falls into a few clear buckets.

  • Be easy for AI to quote. Clear definitions, structured data, FAQ markup, and answer-style content that a model can lift in one sentence.
  • Be cited by sources AI trusts. Independent reviews, comparison sites, podcasts, communities like Reddit, and Wikipedia-style references all feed AI training and retrieval.
  • Show up in the questions your buyers ask. Track real questions, not generic keywords. “Best X for Y team size” beats “best X” every time.
  • Verify your changes worked. AI answers shift week to week. Without measurement, you are guessing.

How to start in one afternoon

  1. Pick ten real questions your buyers ask before they buy.
  2. Type each one into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.
  3. Write down whether your brand was mentioned, and which competitors were.
  4. For every question where you were missing, ask the AI a follow-up. “Why did you not mention [your brand]?” The answer usually points at a concrete gap.
  5. Fix one gap and check again in a week.

That is GEO. Diagnose. Fix. Verify. Repeat.
